This focus will have numbers into the thousands and using addition and subtraction in word problems. There will be an introduction to multiplication and division. This year will also continue work on fractions.
Reading
The Reading Workshop Model is the program we use at Dunning. The units are based on the Lucy Callkins Reading program. This model allows the children to choose books in their "just right" level to read and apply the lessons taught. In second grade we will be focusing on the units of fairy tales, nonfiction, and fiction with a focus on the characters of the books.
Science and Social Studies
There are three Science units in second grade. The first is called the Living Environment which introduces different habitats for plants and animals. The second is about the changing Earth in which the effects of weathering is discussed. The final unit is about Matter and Energy where the children will learn about friction.
There are also three units in Social Studies. The first is about Communities which focuses on the different kinds of communities such as urban, rural, and suburban. The second unit focuses on geography and how the land and people interact. The final unit is named Cultural Mosaic and this focuses on the various traditions throughout the world.
Writing
Framingham uses the Lucy Calkins program for writing. The children will be doing much writing this year. There are four areas of focus that the children will be writing. They will write a personal narrative- a story about something that happened to them, poetry, a persuasive writing piece, and an informational piece- something they are an "expert" on.
